PORTLAND OVATIONS PROJECT: Recycled Tablescapes
Posted onOctober 8, 2009

Portland Ovations fund raiser, Epicurian, has come and gone. Our “Tablescapes” were a hit! In fact, they were so popular that two, Julia’s Portland Observatory, and Mr. Presby’s Dancing Lobsters, were included in the auction!
These stands are now back at LMS, where they will be on display until February, when they will return to Merrill Auditorium. At that time ScrapArts, the Canadian musicians who created their instruments from scrap metal, and the inspiration for Tablescapes, will be performing. We are excited that not only will their creations be at Merrill at that time, but so will the students. We are planning to bring the 7th grade to see a performance!
So the Tablescapes project has wound down, but these wonderful, whimsical sculptures will remain to remind us of the successful collaboration of Portland Ovations, PATHS welding program and LMS art classes.
Here is the final product. It is the first of 26! The jumble of soda can leaves and army of containers are ready to be assembled into the remaining 25.
Next we turn our attention to recycled containers for the centerpieces. Recycled containers: yogurt containers recreated with the addition of newspaper pulp. Here Liam and Michaela are making progress while Jordan mans the blender to keep us supplied with pulp.
Next we began working on the centerpieces. Here students are again working with our collection of discarded items: milk bottle caps, tire inner tubes, aluminum from soda can, old CDs, etc. Our goal was to design smaller items that also related to Ovations three themes; Canadian/American Cultureal Exchange, the African Diaspora, and Innovation.
So here are a few of our recycled table stands the day they arrived at LMS after being built by welding students at PATHS. Their pleased designers are Megan, EZ, Julia and Rachel.
This is the collection of junk metal scraps that we collected for Tablescapes. We were asked by Portland Ovations if we would like help with their annual fundraiser by creating table stands and table centerpieces out of recycled materials. It sounded like a fun challenge. Not only did they need to be made from recycled materials, but also relate to the three themes of Canadian/American Cultural Exchange, the African Diaspora, and Innovation. After Mr. Presby agreed to work with us on the project, we were ready to research, brainstorm and design with our trash!
This rooster was designed and made at PATHS in Mr. Presby’s welding classroom. Made in the manner of the work by many artists today, this sculpture is made up completely of old, discarded materials. Recycled art like this works well for the artist because they don’t need to buy new art materials, and well for the rest of us and the environment because less material is being thrown away. In this case, the rooster is built of old, discarded gardening tools. To see more art work made of recycled materials, see the Recycled Art page.
