Parent Workshops Focus on Dangerous Decisions

Portland Public School parents are invited to attend upcoming workshops on substance abuse and depression and suicide.  Both workshops will take place in the Deering High School library.

“Dangerous Decisions, Part I: Drug and Alcohol Use” will be held on April 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  The evening will focus on warning signs of drug and alcohol use, how to talk to children about the issue and where to go for help.

“Dangerous Decisions, Part II: Depression and Suicide” will be held on May 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  The evening will include a presentation by Sandy Fisher, whose son Scott died of suicide in September 2005, just a few months after graduating from Deering.  There will be a discussion about depression, signs of suicidal thoughts and what a parent can do.

I would like to applaud your efforts with this subject…. we don’t know how many it has touched and it is very important subject matter. ((I remember how astonished I was when the Mother from Greely called and said Matt Butler was the second friend of her son’s “that was gone”…and what could she do to help her son — she had never seen him like this.))

Additionally I wonder if you have seen the film that Shoshanna helped create…There Ought to be a Law. I believe I was not the only person in the audience that thought there was a waiting time for all gun purchases…not so. A rifle or shotgun can be purchased without any wait period to anyone over 18 yrs of age. (we do have some 18 yr old students in our programs). I wonder if Shoshanna could give you some information to be included in handouts or upcoming dates of local showings of the film.

    Keep up your GREAT work!
