Student AUP for PPSD

April 2nd, 2008

You may not know that the Portland School District has a “Student Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Policy” (AUP).  It outlines what students may and may not do while using school computers.

Download the PDF here

Students violating the policy could lose their Internet Access.  In some cases for the duration of their Portland Schools enrollment.

Problem Reporting

March 14th, 2008

Sometimes it’s hard to find me…(did I hear an Amen?).  But now, through the magic of technology, any one can send me an email by using a Problem Report Application. (download below)  When you submit a report it sends me information about the iBook you are using, including your name, iBook number, and your message.   I can followup on it almost immediately regardless of which school I am at.  Use it for anything, no matter how little it seems.   You can download the application HERE    Keep it in your ‘MyApps’ folder and you can use it as needed.

Keeping up to date with RSS

February 1st, 2008

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a way to automatically be aware of new content on Blogs.

By Bookmarking an RSS Feed, you can be alerted by a change in the bookmark icon when new content is found. In Safari for example, a number in parenthesis ex: (1), tells us that there is one addition to the bookmarked site.

Clicking on the RSS icon RSS will take you to a “feed” view of the site. Once there, add it to your bookmarks and you will be “subscribed” to the feed.

Clicking on the icon a second time will ‘toggle’ you back to the default web view.

What do you want to know?

December 11th, 2007

Everyone seems to want to know something….here you can post comments and let me know about what interests you…concerning iBooks of course!

Just reply to this post and I will try to answer questions as I can.

What’s a “PDF” and how do I make one?

December 6th, 2007

What in the world is a ‘PDF’ file….
I think it might be “Pretty Darn Funny” or maybe “Parkinson’s Disease Foundation”. Or maybe even “Publico Decreto Fecerunt”!
But the real acronym definition is…

“Portable Document Format”

In other words a ‘PDF’ file is an “electronic version of a printed document. Complete with all the detail and formatting as if it were a printed document.”

Appleworks slows down…still

November 30th, 2007

For those wishing Appleworks would just work faster…Especially when first starting up. Download the attached file, unzip it,(double click) and drop it into your “MyApps” folder.

tip: For most of you the default download location is your ‘Desktop’. It may also automatically unzip itself when you download the file.

Run the Application every other week or so and it will make things run more smoothly.

WARNING: It deletes your ‘recent items’ links…so don’t forget where you save them!

Download AppleWorksSpeedUp.zip Here!

Appleworks File Won’t Open!

November 16th, 2007

Sometimes Appleworks just has a bad day and an error message pops up that says I/O error.

If the document is a presentation…sorry, but it is permanently damaged. Use Keynote next time.

If it is a text document you can open it with Textedit, copy the text you need, and paste it into a new Document. Try using NeoOffice instead of Appleworks to avoid this problem.

Click below for a quick video demonstrating the process.

What’s Wrong with My Screen?

November 16th, 2007

Broken Screen

Screens are the most fragile part of an iBook. Apple does not warranty this condition.

Screens can be cracked by any of the following:

  • Dropping the computer
  • Forcing the lid open against the latch
  • Opening too far
  • Closing to hard
  • Closing on something resting on the keyboard
  • Stepping on it while in it’s case
  • Falling on it
  • Groupwise Web Access Tip

    November 14th, 2007

I want to send an email to parents from my iBook. How do I do it?
In Groupwise, all the email lists are accessable, but in a slightly different manner.

To send using a parent distribution list, you would access that through your personal address book, identified by your full name.

However, upon first inspection it may appear to be blank. Simply press the “search” button while leaving the search entry field blank.

The list should them populate and give you the group that you need.

For a short video (2 min) click the link below. The video also talks about using the ‘Bc’ field as well as how to delete an accidental recipient entry.

    WebMail Tip 1

Use the ‘Back’ button on your browser to return to this page. More Groupwise info may be found on the CTS blog.

    NeoOffice Tip 1

    November 8th, 2007

Are others having a hard time reading your documents? Maybe they are saving like test.odt instead of test.doc. The video link below will walk you through changing the default ’save’ format to ‘.doc’.

    What Time is it?

    November 6th, 2007

Many iBooks seem to have the wrong date/time every now and then. This usually is the reason that Safari fails to open properly as well.

Normally the iBooks clock will automatically check with another computer and set it’s time correctly. By using the ‘1to1 Prefs’ you can reset your clock to the correct time.

     1to1 Prefs

Click on the image to watch a video. Afterwards, pressing “back” will return you to this page.

If you followed all the steps correctly, and the time is still wrong, bring your iBook to Mr. Brown.

    What causes it?

Usually it shows up on iBooks when they are shut down improperly. Holding the power button down, using the force shutdown sequence, and ‘popping’ the battery are the reasons for poor clock performance.

    Installing Printers on iBooks

    November 5th, 2007

The normal method for installing a printer on the ibooks is to go to

    http://printers.portlandschools.org (or local)

    iprint1.jpg

Once there, select the printer you wish to install from the list.

Note: The first three digits are the school identifier. ie MMS for Moore, etc.

iprint2.jpgAfter making your selection you will be asked if you wish to install the printer…Click OK.

iprint3.jpgA successful install will only take a few seconds.

iprint4.jpgIf you get an error, try the “…If All Else Fails…” link on the right.

    October 24th, 2007

You may not know that you can easily connect to your student or teacher network folders from your iBook.  The link below will walk you through the process….or you can press ‘Apple key +K ‘ to start the process on your own.
