Sold is a book on a girl Named Lakshimi who lives in a village in Nepal.
Her family is very poor because Lakshimi and her mom just stay home and help the newborn baby, and Lakshimis stepfather gambles away all the money they have almost every night. Lakshimi has a relative that works in the Land of golden rooftops, where she works as a maid. So Lakshimi wants to go work as a maid herself and get money so her family will survive. As Lakshimi gets in her teen years, she is brought downtown so she can go work as a maid. On her journey towards the Land of Golden rooftops she notices that nothing is what she hoped it would be. Once she gets there, there are no rooftops smothered in gold, but a small house where many women with lots of makeup and short dresses live. Then she realizes something, her stepfather has sold her into prostitution. And before she can go home, she has to pay off her debt for how much she got paid before her journey, and how much food and electricity and medicine she uses. One fine day, an american comes to the house, he asks Lakshimi if she wants to get of here ad go home, she tells him that she does but she cant because shes trapped. SO the american comes back the next day and brings many white men with shiny badges and guns. Her boss got arrested and Lakshimi is now free to go after a long year of being a 13 year old prostitute
