8th Grade U.S. History Course Information
8th grade U.S. is the study of the Early American History and Colonization in regards to:
History, Civics and Government, Geography, and Economics. History involves the study of the historical progress and development of the United States.The focus will cover early exploration of the Western Hemisphere from perspectives of individual citizens and countries including major historical events. Civics and Government examine various forms of government and their applications in the development of government in the United States. Geography will include Early U.S. history through the Reconstruction period after the Civil War. Economics will include the study of how and why trade develops and how it shaped the the American system of governement and policy.
WHAT DO WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO LEARN AND BE ABLE TO DO?
The following outcomes represent the knowledge and skills grade 8th students are expected to learn by the end of 8th grade. Students will know/be able to:
• Interpret information from multiple sources primary,secondary
• Notetaking organization skills to produce a product
• Use six traits of Writing to produce effective research paper
• Analyzing Perspectives using Political Cartoons, Propaganda
• Describe selective turning points in American History
• Reality vs. Myths: Davy Crockett, Paul Revere’s ride etc.
• Teaching tolerance Salem witch trials, immigration
studies
• Economic systems comparison
• Civics and Government purposes/types Analyzed
HOW DO WE KNOW WHEN THEY HAVE LEARNED THE KNOWLEDGE AND THE SKILLS?
Students in this grade will be assessed during the year using the following common summative (end of unit) assessments:
• United States Geography and major landforms
3x+ a year (Pre, Mid, Post, ongoing)
• 8th Grade level Vocabulary Social Studies based terms
3x+ a year (Pre, mid, Post, ongoing)
• 6 traits of Writing Rubric model
3x a year (Pre, mid(paper), Formal Research project with Library
