Printer Management

Posted by: Geoffrey O'Brien | September 5, 2007 |

The Computer Technology Services Department has implemented a new way to manage your printers, it’s called iPrint.  iPrint is a totally web-based printer management that not only helps you install the printers you need, but also provides a standard printing protocol for all computer platforms (Linux, Macintosh, and Windows).

The easiest way to start using iPrint is to point your web browser to:  http://printers.portlandschools.local this will bring you the District’s Printer listing.

If you look on the left hand side of the page there are links made for all the printers that are available.  If you do not know the name of the printer you are looking for, the descriptions may help you decide.  To install a printer click on the printer name.

If you are running Windows XP or Mac OS X installed by our department the iPrint client is already installed.  If you are running an older version of Windows or have a computer that was not imaged by the CTS department, it may ask you to install the client, just follow the onscreen instructions.

Once you click on the printer you wish to install it will ask if you want to install the printer, if you are on a Windows machine, you will also have an option to make it your default printer at this time.

If you decide to install the printer it will download the appropriate drivers and profiles for you, it’s that easy.

You will be notified when the printer installation has been completed, and you can then begin using your newly installed printer(s).

 Troubleshooting:

If you are having issues with your printer, such as a print job not printing out, or the printer is showing an error, the first step would be to see if the printer is physically on.  If the printer is on just double check that the network cable is plugged in.  If the printer has an external print server (little brown box) make sure that is plugged in, and powered on as well.

If you still can’t print after you have checked the physical connections, then we recommend you delete you printer, and reinstall it again, based on the instructions provided in the beginning of this document.
