10/28/07 - Authenticated Printing Issues (Solved)

October 28th, 2007

After a ton of research as to why people couldn’t print, I had come to the conclusion that some of the user accounts in eDirectory were missing the uniqueID LDAP attribute, which is the same as their username, or CN.  This happened because user accounts that were created with NWAdmin32 did not create the newer LDAP attributes like ConsoleOne and iManager does.  This would also explain when I created a new account and gave it rights to the printers, such as the temporary “print” account it worked fine.

To fix this issue I did an LDAP export from ConsoleOne and filtered out the usernames that were missing the uniqueID LDAP attribute.  From there I modified/created a mini perl script that would look at that file and create an import file with the appropriate ADD statements based on the username.  I then imported that newly created file back into eDirectory, and it populated the user accounts with the uniqueID attribute.

I am going to assume that all will be back to normal on Monday with authenticated printing, but if you are still having issues, please contact the Help Desk, 842-5399.

10/26/07 - Printer Authentication (In Progress)

October 26th, 2007

We have figured out the reason for the sudden printing mishaps across the district, but we will need a few more days to complete the changes.  This requires us to touch each user account to add some information to allow it to work.  We will be sending out a mass email when the issue has been totally resolved.  If you are still having issues, please refer to this article in regards to start printing without waiting for us to finish.

10/25/07 - Presumpscot & Lyseth Connections

October 25th, 2007

Presumpscot and Lyseth elementary schools had an problem with their switches this morning, the technicians went over and resolved the issue. If you are still having issues, please contact the help desk - 207-842-5399.

10/25/07 - Printer Authentication

October 25th, 2007

This morning we are experiencing some issues with users authenticating to administrative, or secured printers throughout the district. We have narrowed it down to our backend database called eDirectory, which is what the printing system uses to verify who is who when printing a document. The only printers that are effected are these secured printers, so all other printers should be ok. If you receive a window asking you to authenticate you can use the following information if your login does not work.

Username: print
Password: print

If you are still having issues, please contact the help desk - 207-842-5399

October 24th, 2007

The printing services for the Portland Public School Department will be down from 7-9pm tonight for a scheduled upgrade. The issues I hope to resolve tonight are:

1.  Printing to secure and iPrint direct printers with an Intel Macintosh computer

2.  Printing with Windows Vista

3.  Fixing an error when PPD files are not found on the server.
