Arts Academy Meeting Notes, Apr. 25, 2007
April 25, 2007 at 1:40 pm | In Minutes |Summary:
Meeting adjourned at 2:10 p.m.
Next meeting: Monday, 4/30 at 1:40 in the Music Room, to discuss PATHSFEST planning.
It’s OK for students to spoof the HOME project, as long as they "mock it well". Mocking is OK as long as it’s quality work.
Teachers can decide whether or not they want to dedicate Mondays as HOME project work days. If you want Bo to come in to your class on a Monday workday, please let him know in advance.
PATHSFEST: Teachers who have students with HOME performance pieces should fill that in on the PATHSFEST sign-up sheet along with any other courses or exhibits they are offering. During PATHSFEST we will have a HOME project area in the first floor hallway outside Phil’s classroom.
Phil and Val distributed copies of the PATHSFEST sign-up sheet and a draft of the news release.
Present:
- Vicky Stubbs
- Phil Divinsky
- Val Green
- Lisa DiFranza
- Diane Manzi
- Dave Nichols
- Dave Beane

Full Notes (paraphrased):
The calendar has been updated to include the Awards Day (no workshops that day), an extra workday on Tuesday, May 15, a setup day on Monday, May 21, and a T Shirt Demo Day in Graphic Arts next Wednesday, May 2.
We went around the table discussing what projects our students were doing, and which students wanted to migrate to another class or just receive help from another instructor. We have about 21 students (counting both sessions) who will be migrating, not including Commercial Art and Fashion Merchandising students, who are busy working on the Art Show and on the Fashion Show.
Teachers can decide whether or not they want to dedicate Mondays as HOME project work days. If you want Bo to come in to your class on a Monday workday, please let him know in advance.
Before migration occurs, we should talk to kids about how they need to behave when visiting another program, that they are representing their class, not just themselves.
Brief PATHSFEST discussion: we will need to schedule both "regular" PATHSFEST performances, and also performances of HOME projects for those that are some kind of performance piece. Teachers who have students with HOME performance pieces should fill that in on the PATHSFEST sign-up sheet along with any other courses or exhibits they are offering.
During PATHSFEST we will have a HOME project area in the first floor hallway outside Phil’s classroom.
We talked briefly about students who are resistant to the HOME project. Lisa told some Music students that it’s OK to mock the HOME project in writing ro with a project, but "mock it well". For students who are resistant, the ability to do a spoof might give them something to latch onto. What are models for mocking serious stuff? Spinal Tap, others?
Also, "we don’t want this to be a squeaky clean, Hallmark project", projects of all kinds and in all kinds of stages are OK.
There was a brief discussion about appropriate content and the various ideas about what obscenity is. We may need to talk to our students about the audience and appropriateness, legal issues associated with being a school, etc.
Phil distributed the PATHSFEST sign-up sheet that he will be giving to the staff.
Val distributed the first draft of the PATHSFEST news release, which will be updated with selected course offerings when we know what they are. [p.s.: the Web site is up, here. The description will be updated shortly.]
