Next meeting: Wednesday, November 1, (during staff development), location TBA.
- Literacy:
- We need to define it, starting with the standards. We need to decide what are baseline skills and what are skills specific to our content areas.
- Visioning and Timeline:
- We need to go through the list from the Visioning Night, streamline it, add our ideas about the “curriculum menu” exercise and student visions of space (arts wing), and decide on relative importance and timing of items.
- We need to talk more about a concrete project around “school” that could be presented at PATHSfest, coming (we hope) out of the "curriculum menu" exercise.

Next meeting: Monday, October 30, at 1:40 p.m. in the Music room. Be thinking about services that we could auction off for fundraising.
Please bring in something that we can raffle off or sell at our table at the CBHS Craft Fair.
We should be sending people more regularly to creativity workshops and the like.
Can we do an academy-wide project around the concept of "home"? What would that look like?
We need to get a list of writing exercises and strategies together to do with our students (maybe some of our classes can do these together).
Before December, we need to get all of our students together to do a structured visioning exercise for what an academy would look like.
Fundraising ideas:
- Raffles at the CBHS Craft Fair
- Auctioning off services
- Participating in the East End Time Bank (barter)
Phil McCormick will be coming to meetings (he is subbing for Dave Beane).

Next meeting: Thursday, October 19th, at 1:40 p.m. in the Music room.
Handouts distributed:
- short-term and long-term AARAT goals
- Education Weekly article about Connecticut tech. school reform
Argy Nestor is here tomorrow. Class visits in the A.M. Bring your lunch to the Music room at 10:30.
Elizabeth will be working with Sue Steele on how to connect with the community, and with John Marcigliano on grant-writing. This frees up the AARAT to work on visioning. Elizabeth will send a weekly e-mail update to free up meeting time for visioning.
The Visioning Night is tomorrow. We need a representative to attend the Academic Rigor session.
The Graduation Requirements Task Force’s current proposal looks scary for vocational schools. We need to be proactive and start to detail how our programs will prepare students to meet the standards for English and Math. The literacy specialist can help us with this. Also, Vicky will contact Derek Pierce about getting together with CBHS Math teachers to get more math into our curricula.
At our next meeting, we will develop a timeline, with action items for each timeline item.

Everyone should give Elizabeth 5 names for the contact list by next week.

Argy Nestor will be here on Monday, 10/16. From 9:30-10:30 she may stop by your classes. Bring your lunch to eat in the Music Room at 10:30. Ask Phil if you want to order from the café.
Arts Academy Meeting Notes, Oct. 2, 2006
October 2, 2006 at 1:40 pm | In Minutes | No CommentsSummary:
No meeting on Thursday. No meeting next Monday because of the holiday. Next meeting is Thursday, October 12 @ 1:40 in the Music room.
Articles distributed:
- Many Flags
- Dennis Littky (MET school)
- Big Picture Company
- Argy Nestor (ME Dept of Ed.)
Most of the discussion centered around our long-term goal of becoming a comprehensive high school. Long-term, we need to think about:
- Getting other teachers (Math/English/Science/Soc. Studies/etc.) here or somehow working with our students. Getting a teacher here would probably mean transferring a teacher from another school in today’s budget times.
- Understanding the work that the graduation task force is doing at the state level to determine credit requirements. If students aren’t necessarily held to hourly requirements, but are held to standards, then we can figure out how we can prepare our students to meet those standards.
- Possibly becoming a school for Portland Schools only (and for students whose parents want to pay tuition).
In the short term, we need to think about:
- Making sure our curricula meet the new standards as set forth in the Maine Learning Results.
